Specific provisions to be implemented are:

  • Holy Communion under both forms (the Body and the Blood of Christ) is to be the norm for all Masses in archdiocese.

  • The entire assembly is to stand from after the Great Amen through the distribution of Holy Communion, and everyone should remain standing when they return to their seat until all have received and the presider is seated. At that point, a period of religious silence is to be observed and each individual has the option of sitting or kneeling for this.

  • Each person should make a bow of the head before receiving the Body of Christ and a bow of the head before receiving the Blood of Christ.

  • No one is to dip their own host into the Blood of Christ to receive Holy Communion by intinction - only a priest can give Holy Communion by intinction, placing the host on the tongue of the communicant and using the procedures set forth in the Norms.

  • Ministers of the Blood of Christ are to reverently consume what remains in their chalice when their communion line is finished - no Precious Blood is to be poured into the sacrarium or onto the ground.

  • A limited number of lay people in each parish are to be designated in a letter to Archbishop Brunett as being authorized and trained by the pastor for the purification of sacred vessels.

The Norms are available on the USCCB website in both English and Spanish. The English version is at http://www.usccb.org/litugy/current/norms.htm , and the Spanish version is at http://www.usccb.org/litugy/current/girm/fill.htm . The English form is also available in booklet form for $5.95 from the USCCB. You may call 800-235-8722 to order publication #5-432.

If you have questions regarding the Norms or any of the new guidelines put forth by the USCCB, please contact Father Vic.
